Create Single Bins

Warehouse Setup / Bin Maintenance / Create Bin - Create Bin [WHS010]

A bin is a physical placeholder in a warehouse where inventory should be placed or stored. It must have a precise address that would tell operators where a particular product or product group is located. Bins can be configured to allow random storage or fixed SKU by bin storage, as well as to limit the number of license plates/Track ID's allowed to be put into the bins.

You can have various bin location types, including Bulk locations, Pickface locations, Reach Truck locations, and Receiving locations.

Bins can be created one at a time, by creating a single bin, or by doing a multiple bin import.

As soon as stock is placed into a bin, the bin is created in SYSPRO. There are however a SYSPRO Warehouse setup setting that must be correct. For more information, refer to SYSPRO Warehouse setup

  • The creation and configuration of Bins are located on the Main Menu under WMS Menu / Warehouse Setup / Bin Maintenance / Create Bins

  • Browse to the Create Bins location and click to open

  • The Create Bin window will appear

  • At the top of the screen, you will find a list of Bin Label formats that can be used to print your labels. The default FASTTRACK WMS installation has four different bin label sizes for bin locations

  • The four different bin label sizes are:

    • BinLabel_3x1.5 template

    • BinLabel_4x2.5 template

    • BinLabel_4x4 template

    • BinLabel_1DLetter (Large letter size) template

  • The default, selected template will be the BinLabel_3x1.5 template, but any of the available formats listed above can be selected before clicking the Create/Print button located in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen

  • A Bin must always be associated with a Warehouse, therefore select the associated Warehouse from the Link Bin to Warehouse drop-down. The same bin location cannot be setup in more than one warehouse. This is to ensure the scanning of the stock will automatically manage warehouse transfers without having to ask the user for the related warehouse codes.

  • Select which Type of Bin you want to create

  • The following types exist:

    • Pickface Bin - this bin automatically creates a pick face pallet record within the bin with the same name as the bin location code. This pick face pallet record will never become inactive even is stock reduces to zero as it understands that this is a pick face bin and more inventory will be placed in the bin in future. Pick face bin are typically maintained in the pick face setup function of the software where a single or group of stock codes are linked to the pick face bin. Min and Max levels are set and the replenishment system manages movements into the bin. Pick faces are used in most warehouse and facilitate improved order picking productivity. Pick face bins can also be setup for WIP environments to hold stock at a machine. 

    • Bulk Bins - most general bin locations are flagged as bulk bins. These bins are always random storage locations and will allow any stock codes to be placed within them. Typically stock on Track ID's is scanned into and out of these bulk bins.

    • Reach Truck - These bins are for high rise racking where a forklift cannot operate. These bins are exactly the same as bulk bins but can be used to identify where a reach truck is needed on a picking slip. 

    • Receiving/Picking/Floor Bins - these bins are used for any marshalling type bin location where you do not want the inventory to be available to reservation for any sales orders or jobs. All newly received stock would typically be received into one of these bin locations. Any stock currently in the picking process would reside in this bin type. 

  • If you select a Pickface Bin you have the option to create the bin and not print a label. You can uncheck the Do Not Print Labels check box here

  • When creating Bulk Bins, you also have the option to create a TrackID record by selecting the Create TrackID record check box

  • The Receiving bins (Receiving/Picking/Floor) are used for already received products from Purchase Orders Receipts or Job Receipts, and therefore the products are not available for picking when in these bins until they have been transferred to other bin locations via the Put Away process (refer to the note Will not be reserved by Picking)

  • After you have selected your Bin Type, you can update the Bin Options

  • Under the Bin Options heading, you can set the Picking Sequence, Area, Zone or Number of TrackIDs.

  • The Picking Sequence option is only available for Pickface Bins and for the picking of lot traceable stock codes on the scanner. There are three options in the drop-down: USER, FIFO (First In First Out), LIFO (Last In First Out). It dictates when the scanner should ask the user to enter the Lot Number (if set to USER) or otherwise consume the Lots in the FIFO or LIFO Sequence if selected

  • The Area and Zone drop-downs allow you to link the Bin location to a predefined Area or Zone. For more information regarding Areas and Zones refer to Creating Areas and Creating Zones

    • Areas - One can link a bin location to a predefined area code. Areas are used in the software to allow for various order picking splitting. A user can break down a warehouse into a number of areas and then setup the picking process to split orders by area so that we have different picking teams working in different areas.

    • Zones - One can link a bin to a predefined zone code. Zones are used to drive the optimal placement of inventory during the put away process. For instance we may want all electronic products based in one range of bins and all mechanic products in another range of bins. Setting up zones and linking bins to zones facilitates this. 

  • The Number of TrackIDs drop-down allows you to configure the maximum number of TrackIDs that will fit in the specific Bin location. A Put-Away transaction will fail if there are already this number of TrackIDs in the destination bin that you are trying to transact in to.

  • The Bin Volume field is only used in the premium version of DATASCOPE WMS. It is however used for reporting purposes and will be used to calculate theoretical available space for the optimization of put away process.

  • The free format, Bin Number text box at the bottom of the screen, is used to type your new bin location number into. The Bin will then be created in WMS with the value that has been entered into this field. (For example 01-02-A)

  • This free-format text box has a maximum length of fifteen characters.

  • Select Create/Print to create and print your Bin Label

  • If you want to do a re-print, you can select the Create/Print button again and a reprint will occur

Create a range of Bin locations

To create a range of Bin locations and numbers, you can use the column on the right-hand side of the screen.

Create a comma-separated list in a text document

  • Copy the list (by using the right-click menu on your mouse or CTRL + C on your keyboard)

  • Paste the list into the Bins to Print/Create column (by using the right-click menu on the screen or CTRL + V on your keyboard)

  • The software will automatically recognize which Bin locations are new to the system and would need to be created and which already exist and require a reprint.

  • Click on the Create/Print button and the Bin range in the data grid will either be created or reprinted.

  • Select the Clear button to clear the data grid of entries.
